Creation of committee to debate further disciplinary action for Senator Monserrate is necessary.

Today, October 20, 2009 Senate President Malcolm Smith and Conference Leader John Sampson announced the creation of a special committee to discuss additional disciplinary action for Senator Hiram Monserrate resulting from his conviction to misdemeanour assault charges.

The College Democrats of New York’s President Ian Rivera reacted, “The actions of Senator Monserrate are abysmal for any human being and for an elected official to behave in such manner, is even worse. “

Rivera went on to praise the Senate Democratic leadership for creating the committee, which will be chaired by Senator Eric Schneiderman and have a majority of Democrats. “The actions taken by Senators Smith and Sampson are entirely necessary and completely appropriate. I commend the leadership on taking this initiative and urge all of the sixty-one other Senators to vote in favour of expelling Senator Monserrate.”

The College Democrats of New York strongly echo the public sentiment against domestic violence. “Domestic violence is not a partisan issue or even a political one; it is a humanitarian issue. No individual should ever treat another person like Senator Monserrate did,” Rivera concluded.
