More Money for College in Stimulus

During last nights press conference, President Obama made an important point about college tuition. Something that is probably important to all readers of this blog is how to make college affordable as the economy slows. Under the new stimulus, students will recieve a tax credit to help us get through these tough times. Here is the text from the speech:
When passed, this plan will ensure that Americans who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own can receive greater unemployment benefits and continue their health care coverage.

Obama Takes the Campaign to the People

Yesterday President Obama brought his fight to pass the stimulus bill to the people.  After a speech in Elkhart Indiana, a town that has more than twice the national average of unemployment.  Then last night the President addressed the American people to talk to them about the gravity of the situation.

Unions and Protestors Gear up for Gov Paterson's Visit to Binghamton

As previously mentioned on our blog entries, Governor Paterson will be continuing his upstate tour to promote his budget plan, visiting Binghamton this Wednesday. Although questions will be screened (they needed to be submitted online before the event), Governor Paterson is expected to answer a wide range of questions about SUNY budget cuts, and the economy. Doors will open at Broome Community College starting at 4:30pm. As a Binghamton University senior, I was a little dissapointed that the Governor will not be speaking at my school.

Open Left founder Mike Lux to Speak at the College Dems of NY Convention

Last night on our College Democrats of NY conference call, our executive board approved of having Mike Lux speak at our CDNY Convention taking place Friday April 17- Sunday April 19. at St. Johns University in NYC. Mike Lux was a former aide to President Clinton and was on the Obama transition team as the "Progressive Liason." Mike will be speaking to our expected crowd of 175 college democrat members on Saturday morning, sometime after 10am. The exact time is still to be determined. Mike is also the founder of the blog, Open Left.

Reviewing the College Democrats' Constitution

The College Democrats of New York, like other organizations, has a Constitution that outlines the shape and purpose of our organizations. Our mission as a student organization is to help elect Democrats from the grassroots level up, train and engage new generations of democratic student activists, shape the Democratic Party with voices from America's youth, and to become a potent political voice on the issues that impact the student population. But every so often, the rules and procedures we follow in that mission need updating.

CDNY's new Regional Directors

The College Democrats of New York have two new Regional Directors for the new semester. Max Weiss is now the Central New York Director, and Andrew Desmarais is the Director for the North Country region. Regional Directors act as representatives of their region's chapters, help maintain ties between chapters and other Democratic organizations in their areas, and help foster new chapters. Congratulations Andrew and Max!

Notes from the CDNY eboard conference call

Here's the skinny from the CDNY eboard conference call last night:
  • Andrew and Max were both confirmed by the eboard as CDNY's newest regional chairs. Andrew will be in charge of the North Country Region and Max will be the new Central Regional Chair.
  • Convention housing: we are still in the process of finalizing the details for housing arrangements.
  • Our first speaker for our Convention has been confirmed and it will be Mike Lux who will be speaking sometime Saturday morning after 10am.

“As the CBO analysis shows, the Recovery Act has lessened the effects of the worst recession in a generation and is beginning to help turn things around.

“The CBO found the Recovery Act is responsible for 600,000 to 1.6 million jobs and has raised GDP by 1.2 to 3.2 percent. Without the Recovery Act these jobs would have either disappeared or never existed in the first place and this positive economic growth would not have been possible.

“Our economy still has a long way to go and we will not rest until everyone who wants a job can find one, but the economy is no longer in a free-fall. Democrats in Congress showed real leadership by supporting the Recovery Act. Unfortunately, Republicans - the Party of NO -refused to offer an alternative. They stood on the sidelines as President Obama and Congressional Democrats took the steps necessary to reverse the economic decline they inherited after eight years of failed Republican economic policies. Now, by cheering for the Act’s failure, the GOP remains on the wrong side of history. As President Obama and Democrats continue to take steps to strengthen our economy, it’s time for Republicans to stop saying 'No', quit playing politics and start working with us on behalf of American families and workers.” Read More...
